Poliovale is a group founded by Luca Palma and Ernesto Vigneri whose purpose is to create multimedia products for scientific popularization, for advertising, and for professionals who would like to use three dimensional graphic simulations to promote their projects.

The Poliovale group has just recently completed a DVD documentary called “Hannibal at Trasimeno”: a 3D reconstruction of the places, protagonists, and events of the famous Battle of Trasimeno (217 B.C.).
The 45′ minutes DVD is available in English and Italian with subtitles in 5 languages (English, Italian, French, Spanish, and German). As a bonus feature the DVD also includes an accurate description of the Roman army and the Carthaginian troops.

Luca Palma is an architect with a particular interest for 3D computer graphics. Since the year 2000 he has created industrial design projects, as well as environmental impact simulations (all in 3D) for important engineering firms working on large-scale public works and infrastructure projects.
His experience in the world of theater – study of corporeal mime techniques and set designing – have been pivotal for the development of his modeling technique and animations of environments and people in 3D.

Ernesto Vigneri is a graphic designer. The course of his professional development has been a constant trajectory of learning new graphic technologies for visual communication.
His portfolio includes graphic work for editorial and advertising firms, multimedia production, museum displays, corporate identity and 3D graphics.

The Project

The documentary Hannibal at Trasimeno is part of a larger project of scientific popularization related to the Battle of Trasimeno, one of the cruelest and most famous episodes of the Second Punic War. Based on a careful historical reconstruction, the documentary takes the viewer on a fascinating journey through the places and events related to the memorable clash between the Romans and the Carthinaginians on 21 June 217 B.C.E.

The idea for the project was that of Ermanno Gambini, noted scholar of the historical geography of Lake Trasimeno (Project ALLI – Linguistic Atlas of Italian Lakes – University of Perugia), and the documentary Hannibal at Trasimeno was created with the historical and scientific input of Professor Giovanni Brizzi (Professor of Roman History at the University of Bologna) as well as the aid of the illustrator Donato Spedaliere (creator of a sequence of illustrations on the battle’s themes). The screenplay has been written by Antonella Valoroso.

Spedaliere’s illustrations were the starting point for the 3D modeling of the places and the characters created by Ernesto Vigneri and Luca Palma.

The reconstruction of the Battle of Trasimeno through the technique called character animation represents something completely new in documentary filmmaking.

Using virtual models rather than real scenes and actors, Palma and Vigneri have created video sequences in which all the elements – countryside, arms, costumes, movement of crowds of people and of individuals – have been recreated combining the quality of the image rendering with accuracy for historical detail.

Antonella Valoroso, received her Ph.D. in Italian Language and Literature at Yale University (USA) and is at present Professor of Italian Studies at The Umbra Institute in Perugia (Italy). She has published several articles and book chapters on Italian history, theater and literature.

Giovanni Brizzi (b. Bologna, 1946), teaches Roman History at the University of Bologna. An internationally renowned expert on Hannibal and ancient military history, he is the author of widely translated works, including “Hannibal. Something Like an Autobiography” (Milan, 2003) and “Silla” (Rome, 2004).
